Chapter 18

The night had barely begun, the sun had set a mere three hours earlier and so much had already happened. Mie-Mie, Lashanna and the semi-conscious Silence, had arrived at the Brentford branch of the Arcane University via familiar flight. For the two witches, familiar flight was as common as having porridge for breakfast. For Silence, however, the journey was perhaps the most calming experience of his short-lived life.

He lay on his back staring up at the ceiling of Mie-Mie's office, listening to the two of them talking about what to do with him. First, they spoke about disposing of him, as if he were a failed experiment, hardly worth the hassle he caused. Luckily, they passed on to discussing the likelihood of them needing his unadulterated power in the future. Deciding that they needed to take Silence to see Kristophe, the witches transformed into their familiar states.

Mie-Mie raised her hand and as she brought it down, she simply became a larger than life wood owl. Lashanna's transformation was a little bit awkward at first, she arched her back and placed her hands on her hips, mimicking the shape of a bird, and in turn her shape shifted to exactly that, a human-sized goshawk.

They carried Silence through the night’s sky, high enough to evade human sight. The shaded clouds were as cold as ice as they broke through them, but in his dazed state Silence could hardly feel their chill. Somehow, something felt surprising to Silence. It wasn't the fact that he was being carried in the claws of two giant birds of prey that used to be a pair of witches, that was just his life now. What surprised the newly-born Shadow-Fiend was the moon.

Rushing through the clouds Silence looked up, he was high enough to see the stars twinkling in the black abyss and as he stared out, the moon stared back. It watched him, acknowledged him and in some way, Silence felt attuned to it, as if to say the earth’s giant white satellite was a part of him. Staring up at the moon, Silence felt truly at peace and after a short while, regardless of the cold and the dazzling speed in which he was ploughing through the sky, he fell asleep.

Sometime later, Silence awoke to find himself lying on his back once more, this time staring at the ceiling of Kristophe's office. Around him stood Kristophe, Mie-Mie, Lashanna and Jaydon. The echoes of thought made it hard for him to focus on anything. He wanted to get up, he wanted to thank Mie-Mie for stopping him. Most of all, he wanted to apologise for what he had done but all he could do was lie there and listen.

“He almost killed me,” exclaimed Lashanna.

“No, he didn't,” said Jaydon in a dead tone.

“You weren't there,” said Lashanna.

“No, but I remember a lot of timelines and not once has he killed you. In fact, in three of the timelines he actually stops himself,” explained Jaydon.

“Even so, he's dangerous and we have to do something with him,” retorted Lashanna.
